Sustainability and reuse have long been key priorities for AB Stora Tunabyggen, which owns and manages 5,275 residential properties and 186 commercial spaces in Borlänge Municipality. In April, they took the next step by implementing Palats as their digital tool for systematically reusing building materials. The results were quick to follow. In just the first five months, Tunabyggen has circulated reused building materials worth over 600,000 SEK.

Fredrik Gedin is an environmental and waste strategy specialist, and Johan Croneryd works as a construction project manager and procurement strategist at Tunabyggen. Together, they are the driving forces behind the initiative to scale up reuse efforts. We met with Fredrik to discuss how they are tackling the challenge of expanding the reuse of building materials within the organization.

As an environmental and waste strategy specialist, Fredrik's role is to focus on tenant waste management and promote the reuse of building materials within Tunabyggen. Fredrik has launched several successful initiatives that have significantly reduced carbon emissions.

Tool for the Systematic Reuse of Building Materials

“We quickly realized that to systematize our work with reuse, we needed a digital tool. That’s when we found Palats,” says Fredrik.

When Tyréns conducted the initial inventory of reusable materials, it turned out there was a stock value of over 1.2 million SEK. With Palats, Tunabyggen gains an overview of these materials and can easily submit and retrieve items as needed.

Fredrik continues, “for us, Palats has become essential in streamlining and scaling up our work with building material reuse in a structured way.”

Results

By systematizing their reuse of building materials, Tunabyggen has achieved impressive results. They have reused materials worth 635,339 SEK and avoided emissions equivalent to 4,115 kg of CO2e. This clearly demonstrates that their investment in reuse not only reduces emissions but also streamlines operations and lowers costs.
